Another wanderer approached the woman a while later. He greeted her with a smile and asked what kind of town they were looking at. Again, the woman asked what kind of place he was looking for. The man smiled and said, “I hope it’s as good as the one I just visited. The people were terrific, friendly and welcomed me with open arms. I hated to leave but I needed to move on.” At this, the woman nodded and smiled, “To be sure, this is exactly that kind of town. You will be most welcome here.”
This story has stuck with me for over 20 years. The storyteller was a man who’d had a quadruple coronary bypass just 8 weeks previous. He exuded joy and yet was calm. He was at peace. I also remember him asking, “What kind of town would my town be if everyone here was just like me?” Now replace the word town from the previous sentence with “company” and see what you get.
