It’s taken a lot of “letting go” for me to see that the façade I was trying to construct based on my opinions, which were informed by my need to be right, smart, accepted, etc., was a self-constructed illusion that made me the center of the world. Imagine a brick wall of my own design that was painted with all the things that I thought were important. Now imagine taking down that wall, brick by brick, to discover that on the other side is a world so beautiful, so rich in color and texture, and peace and love, that the world I had built and wanted to protect looked gray and dingy in comparison.
You may remember the hit song, Unanswered Prayers, by Garth Brooks. It’s based on the same idea:
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.
