Being healthcare providers for people like Emily, we have to be sensitive to this truth: like their friends, we often have no words to say.
What we can do, though, is to recognize our inability to always have something comforting to offer. When that happens, it is better to recognize our limitations. We cannot disappear, we have to be there with those who may have been emotionally or actually abandoned. Learning to control the urge to say something is hard work. That is our inner voice trying to paint over an uncomfortable situation
It is far better to just be present.
